On April 25, 2026, the Academic Forum on Innovative Development of Digital-Intelligent Twin for New Power Systems kicked off in Taiyuan. Co-organized by the Power Digital Twin Application Committee and the Artificial Intelligence Committee of China Society for Electrical Engineering, the event was attended by over 150 guests including academicians, enterprise executives, committee members and representatives from relevant institutions.
Distinguished attendees included Sun Hongbin, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Taiyuan University of Technology; Yao Liangzhong, Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Dean of Smart Grid Research Institute of Wuhan University; Tian Qi, Member of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Chief Scientist of Huawei Consumer Business Group and Director of Guangming Laboratory; Tian Hongxun, Deputy General Manager of State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Company Limited; Pu Tianjiao, Chairman of the Power Digital Twin Application Committee and Chief Engineer of China Electric Power Research Institute. The opening ceremony and keynote sessions were co-hosted by Pu Tianjiao and Yao Liangzhong.
In his speech, Tian Hongxun stated that against the background of the dual-carbon goals, large-scale integration of new energy and growth of new-type loads have brought prominent challenges such as enhanced source-load uncertainty and insufficient intelligence of traditional digital twins in power grids. It is urgent to upgrade traditional digital twins into self-evolving and self-optimizing digital-intelligent twins.
State Grid Shanxi Electric Power has built a digital evaluation system for distribution networks focusing on grid structure diagnosis and emergency power supply guarantee scenarios, lifting the efficiency of grid structure diagnosis by 30%. He expressed the willingness to deepen cooperation with all parties to tackle core technologies, accelerate achievement transformation, and support the energy revolution in Shanxi as well as the digital and intelligent transformation of the power industry.
During the keynote sessions, Academician Sun Hongbin delivered a speech entitled Digital-Intelligent Twin of Energy Internet. He pointed out that the energy internet has entered a new development stage, which requires a shift from shallow coordination between information and power to in-depth integration across all industries, realizing profound coupling of energy flow, material flow, carbon flow and information flow. The integration of digital twin and artificial intelligence into digital-intelligent twins serves as a core support for full-life-cycle intelligent management and control of the new energy system, which demands full-domain modeling covering multi-energy flows and material flows to boost in-depth integration of energy and various industries.
Academician Tian Qi shared a report titled World Model: Preliminary Exploration and Reflections. He noted that the ultimate goal of AI development is to achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Large models need to evolve from natural language processing to multi-modal capability, and from simple perception to complex interaction. He presented explorations and practices in key technical fields including high-quality and efficient data access for large models, unified framework for multi-modal understanding and generation, in-depth comprehension of long videos, and accurate real-world modeling based on 3D/4D contents, and clarified the technical routes and development trends of next-generation world models.
Professor Cheng Lin from Tsinghua University gave a speech on Data-driven Operational Risk Perception and Closed-loop Management of Distribution-Microgrid Coordination. Targeting the transformation needs of new power systems and high-dimensional uncertain risks in coordinated operation of distribution networks and microgrids, he proposed a decision-oriented optimization method and established a new paradigm of integrated prediction and decision-making for risk perception and closed-loop control, which effectively improves the safe, economical and eco-friendly operation of distribution power systems.
Researcher Yang Yanhong from the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented AI-driven Transient Stability Calculation and Inertia Risk Assessment of New Energy Power Systems. Focusing on security and stability issues under high-penetration renewable energy integration, she put forward a novel assessment framework adopting physical-informed neural networks, QTabM deep learning and other AI technologies, together with corresponding inertia risk assessment and early warning methods, providing innovative technical solutions for stable operation of new energy-dominated power systems.
Lyu Jinyu, Chairman of Yuangong Energy Technology Group, shared Exploration and Practice of Distribution Power Digitalization Technology Application. Based on corporate business layout, he sorted out technical accumulations and engineering practices in power energy digitalization, and elaborated on the technical scheme and typical application scenarios of distributed small and medium-sized wind power plus energy storage integrated systems, demonstrating practical achievements and development visions of promoting rural green power popularization and new power system construction via digital and intelligent empowerment.
A youth talent salon was held concurrently and presided over by Pu Tianjiao. He introduced that China Electric Power Research Institute has long committed to the R&D of core technologies such as digital twin and artificial intelligence, and made continuous original innovations in power industry large models, scientific intelligence, embodied intelligence and credible evaluation, greatly facilitating AI application in the power sector. He encouraged young researchers to stay committed to innovation, take on social responsibilities, delve into frontier fields including digital twin, artificial intelligence and power simulation, and contribute wisdom to the digital-intelligent transformation of new power systems.
Six young experts delivered thematic sharing on digital twin, world model, artificial intelligence, embodied intelligence and intelligent grid simulation, showcasing vigorous vitality and innovative strength of young scientific researchers.
The forum gathered strengths from research institutes, universities and enterprises to conduct in-depth discussions on the innovative application of cutting-edge technologies including digital-intelligent twins and world models in the construction of new power systems.
